My Review

This book is really an interesting way for kids to understand and maybe even take up coin collecting as a hobby. The book does well at explaining how coins were made in the past and also brings Jesus into the story at the end from the scriptures about giving Caesar what is his and God what is his. Marcus is very concerned about being too clumsy to be able to help his father transport the coins, but his mistakes are shown not ruining anything  which would be encouraging to kids. The audiobook voice was inviting and the story would keep kids intrigued to finish it. The voice used had good character voices with different tones and inflections. The author included information on how to look at a coin and understand what you’re seeing. The short Gospel thread at the end reminded kids that God just wants us and loves us. I feel that kids in grade school ages would enjoy this book.

Author Interview

What message do you hope readers take away from your book?

Where we and our family came from and how we arrived where we are today, there’s a story in each of us. A recurring theme to me as I wrote Tangled Promises focuses on this verse: The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all. ~Proverbs 22:2In a world so shattered by differences, God calls us to see we’re all the same in His eyes. From the unborn baby to kings in the land, we’re all cherished by Him. He calls us to forgiveness and love.

Did you have to step out of your comfort zone to write this book? If so, how?

Out of my comfort zone writing this book? Absolutely! Allowing my fledgling attempts be seen by successful authors and hear their critiques. That was tough, but worth it for the invaluable input they graciously offered.

How did you celebrate when you completed your book?

We were covered up in ice and snow when I submitted Tangled Promises to the publisher. But our 50th anniversary was quickly approaching. We spent the Spring and Summer celebrating with family and friends. A trip to the picturesque state of Idaho to visit with friends was a highlight.

Why did you want to become an author?

I always loved stories. Books were my escape from a difficult childhood. I also love to write. Snippets of my family story begged me to ask the question what did their lives really look like? Could the joys and sorrows of the stories I created around them bless readers? So, I write, and I pray that they do.

If you could meet your characters in real life, what would you talk about?

If I could meet my characters in real life, I’d want to know the real stories. I’d ask if I even came close? I would want to know what kept them going through thick and thin—the testimonies of their faith.

More from Lynn

My daughter gifted me a tee shirt for Christmas with an image of a typewriter and the slogan: I make things up. That’s a novelist job! 🙂

Where we and our family came from and how we arrived where we are today, there’s a story in each of us. I find myself often pondering people’s back stories. I regret knowing only the tiniest bits of my own family’s backstory. When I had the opportunity to ask the questions, I was too naive to know what to ask. Decades later I made it up. Tangled Promises was born.

A recurring theme as I wrote Tangled Promises focuses on this verse: The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all. ~Proverbs 22:2

Clara and Daniel lived in the same world. She the daughter of the Baron and he the family’s humble carriage driver. Very much in love with one another, but their social status dictated rules created to forbid their union.

In a world so shattered by differences, God calls us to see we’re all the same in His eyes. From the unborn baby to kings in the land, we’re all cherished by Him. He calls us to forgiveness and love.

While I’ve published a few devotional books, Tangled Promises is my debut novel and the first book in the Promised Destiny series. Thank you for reading. I pray you love it and are blessed.

From Comfort Zone to Trust Zone: How Jesus Urges Us to Take Leaps of Faith for His Kingdom By Cecil Taylor

About the Book

Book: From Comfort Zone to Trust Zone: How Jesus Urges Us to Take Leaps of Faith for His Kingdom

Author: Cecil Taylor

Genre: Christian Living

Release date: March 6, 2024

The innate human longing for comfort is undeniable. However, Jesus challenges us to step beyond the boundaries of our comfort zones and venture into the profound realm of faith, aptly described as trust zones by Cecil Taylor. These are the spaces where we dare to take risks in service of Christ’s Kingdom. In this enlightening exploration of the Bible, Cecil Taylor delves into 12 narratives of Jesus encouraging individuals to forsake their comfort zones in favor of trust zones. Through insightful interpretation, he unveils the valuable lessons these stories impart for contemporary followers of Jesus.

Author Interview

1. Why did you want to become an author?

Interestingly, I didn’t set out to be an author. When I started Cecil Taylor Ministries, I was focused on videos. I thought that people didn’t read books anymore. OK, don’t get harsh with me!

I finally realized the error in my thinking and turned to authorship. I also felt like as I developed videos for church small groups, it would be best to offer something more permanent a student could take away. So I also became an author out of thatnecessity.

However, I had a journalism background as both a teen and as an adult, so writing came fairly easily.

2. What did your research process look like for this book?

The origin of From Comfort Zone to Trust Zone was a couple of pages from my prior book, Live Like You’re Lovedin which I discussed risk-taking for Jesus’s kingdom. I thought about this idea more and more, finally starting a book with the working title of Kingdom Risktakers.

I studied the Gospels and Acts for examples of Jesus challenging people to take a risk for his sake while deepening their trust in him. Along the way, I developed this notion of comfort zones and trust zones, becoming very interested in what each looked like for the scriptural character and what they look like for us today.

A long, solo car ride to and from a high school reunion for listening to the Gospels and Acts being read, as I considered which stories to use. I finally selected a final group of twelve.

From there, the research became digging into the topics and thecharacters that emerged. For example, I learned about the construction of Cologne Cathedral during a European vacation and devoted much of one chapter to that church’s history and how it related to risk-taking and admirable devotion to God.

Another example was learning more about the disciple Thaddeus (who went by several names), his transition from political rebel to Christian martyr, and how he is now known as St. Jude, the patron saint of lost causes. Yes, the famous hospital is named after him.

3. How did you balance keeping your book informative yet engaging as a non-fiction?

That’s where personal experiences and vulnerability are so important. I feel like it’s not enough to supply information to people, because it comes off as lecturing. I share my own mistakes, my own vulnerabilities, my own learning, and that approach keeps the reader engaged. I’m a big believer in being vulnerable in order to build personal connections, whether in a book or in daily life.

4. Did you have to step out of your comfort zone to write this book? If so, how?

Ah, I see what you did there, and I love it! Yes, this book was a risk, so I had to exercise my own “risk muscle” to write it. I fully expected that the book would not be well-received, because people cherish their comfort zones and don’t want to change. I had to release my fears of rejection in order to do what I knew was right. I had to accept potential persecution of a literary sortand trust that the Holy Spirit would connect the people that needed my message.

I am pleasantly surprised at how well the book has been received. To this point, it has attained the most consistently positive Amazon reviews of any book I’ve written. I feel like my risk acceptance was rewarded.

5. What message do you hope readers take away from your book?

I hope they feel a new urgency to listen to and follow the Holy Spirit. We should allow the Spirit to guide our inaction and our action, when we stay and where we go. In my life, the Spirit has changed my calling multiple times, finally leading me to create Cecil Taylor Ministries (which you can learn more about at CecilTaylorMinistries.com). I believe the Spirit loves riding with us each day, helping us deepen our faith and our trust in the Lord. This is the kind of spiritual adventure I wish for my readers, and I pray this book is a part of the process.

About the Author

With more than 30 years’ experience as an adult Sunday School teacher and as many in youth ministry, Cecil Taylor has impacted lives in local churches throughout his adult life. He founded Cecil Taylor Ministries to broaden that impact, teaching Christians to live a 7-day practical faith through books, video studies, and speaking engagements. His ministry is cross-denominational, focused on the common struggle Christians face in putting their faith into practice and applying scripture and faith principles to life situations.

From Comfort Zone to Trust Zone has won the 2024 Living Water Award (nonfiction, third place) from the Blue Lake Christian Writer’s Conference. This is the fourth award that Cecil has been presented across his three books.

More from Cecil

Comfort zones can be positive. Not only do we feel good about ourselves, but we also can be effective and efficient. We can find a groove. We may even be able to mentor others and cause a ripple effect of good.

But comfort zones can fool us. Our comfort zones can become invisible. They can limit us and tell us not to take risks. Comfort zones can keep us from going all-in on what Jesus has to offer us.

As I read the Gospels, I see how Jesus frequently pushed people out of comfort zones and into his trust zones, where they would take leaps of faith for the sake of his kingdom. Similarly, Jesus calls us out of comfort zones today, inviting us to take risks while deepening our faith.

A woman who read From Comfort Zone to Trust Zone said one of the most gripping moments in the book is when I shared my own story of going all-in for Jesus. I had grown up in the church as a preacher’s kid. Throughout decades of my adult life, I was a leader in my church, a highly committed volunteer, someone others might think was all-in for Christ.

But I wasn’t all-in, though I fooled myself into thinking I was. In a time when I asked for more comfort zone, Jesus gave me a trust zone: to forget about volunteering so much and to focus on giving my heart to God. I was busted, as I foolishly thought I had hidden from God that I wasn’t fully yielding control of my life. I didn’t know what Jesus would ask of me, so I held him at arm’s length. My prayers zeroed in on what was comfortable for me rather than what the Holy Spirit was beckoning me to do.

Since that moment, my life has changed. I believe your life needs to change, too, if you’re feeling comfortable. It’s time to get uncomfortable, to overcome your desire for certainty, and to inspect the ways in which you have limited the Spirit’s power to work through you. I invite you on a journey to identify subtle comfort zones that you never knew you had and to uncover trust zones that will take your faith to new levels while mightily serving Christ. I invite you to the experience that is From Comfort Zone to Trust Zone: How Jesus Urges Us to Take Leaps of Faith for His Kingdom.

Authors’ Interview

1. Why did you want to become an author?

Maureen – Because Marta made me. J

Marta – Because God told me too. J I wanted to write for a long time but never felt the timing was right but when I felt God was calling me to write Biblical material, I felt very unworthy, and it came down to obedience. (This is my seventh book)

2. What was the most challenging part of the writing process for you and why?

Maureen – to make myself sit down, block out the world, study and just do it.

Marta – Time. As a leader of a ministry and co-host of a radio show, time is always a challenge.

3. What did your research process look like for this book?

We begin by research all the words for hope (we do this for all the devotionals such as fear, and love, and prayer etc.). Then we begin to choose the Scriptures we believe we will want to write about. This would be fifteen a piece, but we usually choose up to eighteen each, just in case we need to switch. Then we begin to look up the Hebrew or Greek words and put the book into proper sequence. We start to talk about our stories that go with the topic at hand. Then we begin to write. This process takes sometimes a couple of weeks before we ever start writing.

4. What was something new you learned while writing this book?

The Bible is full of stories of hope as well as modern-day hopeful true-life stories.

5. What audience did you have in mind when writing this book?

While we know the majority of our audience is Christian women over thirty-five, we don’t limit our writing. For instance, we have a large male audience for the devotional FearLESS and some of our reviews on Amazon include atheist, who have given us very favorable reviews.

6. How did you balance keeping your book informative yet engaging as a non-fiction?

It’s God’s Word, but with that said our layout of combining color, pictures and stories help to engage our audience and make it more personal.

7. Did you have to step out of your comfort zone to write this book? If so, how?

Maureen – No and yes. This is our third devotional we have written together but our first one FearLESS was a challenge. I never thought of writing a book until Marta approached me. My first answer was no and no thank you, but she asked me to pray about and God said Yes. Therefore, I had to trust that HE would give me the tools to accomplish the task.

Marta – This is the seventh book I have written so I do feel very comfortable in the writing arena, but just like Maureen when God called me to begin writing, I really struggled, and God had to work on me for at least six months before I finally said yes. It came down to obedience and trusting God.

8. How did you celebrate when you completed your book?

Good question. We really haven’t but this is a good reminder to celebrate every completed devotional.

9. Do you have a favorite drink or snack for when you’re writing?

Maureen – snack: depends on the day anything from trail mix to cheezits, drink: - water or ice tea, music: graceandtruthradio.world

Marta – snack: from trail mix to blueberry goat cheese, drink: I’m a water gal, music: is loud Christian music on graceandtruthradio.world

10. What message do you hope readers take away from your book?

God is a God of Hope, never give up hope and God’s Word has the answer to all your questions.

About the Authors

Marta E Greenman – Marta left corporate America in 1998 to become a staff missionary with a church planting organization known today as e3Partners where she led American churches in planting new ones with international church partners. During this period, Marta spent much of her time in the field on evangelism and discipleship traveling to Columbia, Mexico, Moldova, Peru, Romania, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Zimbabwe. She also had the privilege of leading women’s conferences in biblical training.

Marta began teaching Inductive Bible Study at her home church in 1997 where she taught faithfully for fifteen years. Debbie Stuart, a Women’s Ministry Director, said, “Marta Greenman is a master teacher weaving biblical principles, personal stories and clear application with every lesson. She walks in Truth and loves the Word and has dedicated her life to teaching that Truth to women.”

After seven years on the mission field in Romania, Marta began to write Bible study curriculum. Her first study, Bound To Be Free, was published in 2011. May 2011, Marta founded Words of Grace & Truth, a ministry devoted to teaching God’s Word to the nations and teaching others to do the same, through the curriculum God birthed through her teaching ministry. Since then, Leaders, Nations and God and ACTs420NOW have been published. Today she continues to write a series of twelve 30-day devotionals with co-author Maureen H. Maldonado. Their first is entitled FearLESS: God is calling you to be fearless and to FearLESS, second LoveMORE: Your 30-Day Devotional to learn to love like Jesus, third is HopeFULL: Your 30-Day Devotional to Discover Biblical Hope.

Marta’s added GraceAndTruthRadio.World (GTRW), a global radio outreach to the world with God’s message of grace and truth. You can hear her show, Under God with co-host Maureen Maldonado, on GTRW, Monday’s at 3:00pm CST. The passion of her ministry, regardless of the nation she may be in, is teaching God’s Word and equipping others to teach. She is a gifted teacher, speaker and expositor of God’s Word.

Maureen H. Maldonado – Maureen is the second of seven children. Growing up in a home where worldly wealth was a foreign concept, she always felt treasured by her parents and knew she was rich in love. Maureen married young and raised two amazing daughters. Her grandchildren are a blessing beyond anything she could imagine. Recently, she was able to add two granddaughters-in-love who add joy to the mix; and the best yet, God has blessed her with a great-granddaughter!

Maureen has a master’s degree in education from California State University and spent her career as a teacher, vice-principal, and principal in elementary education. Maureen never planned to leave California or the education system, but God had other plans.

After Maureen’s husband was transferred to Arizona in 2006, then to Texas in 2011, she spent several years teaching ‘Just Moved,’ a Christian-based ministry program developed by Susan Miller for women moving homes because of life changes (https://justmoved.org). God used her teaching education and experience as a training ground to begin preparing for Him.

Involved in Bible studies in California, Arizona, and Texas, Maureen grew exponentially in her faith and love of God and His Word. The culmination of these experiences led her to co-host the radio program ‘Under God’ on GraceAndTruthRadio.World, where God’s Word is taught to the nations.

Today, Maureen is using her new-to-her method of studying the Bible and her long-applied teaching methods to teach the next generation of believers. Her prayer is for others to gain as much insight into God’s transformational Word as she has received. She describes it as “opening the shades and letting in all the sunlight on a gloomy day.” Maureen feels honored and humbled to be a part of Words of Grace & Truth and asks others to join in prayer for this needed ministry, the church, our country, and our world. LoveMORE is the second devotional Maureen has co-authored with Marta. Their first devotional was FearLESS: God is calling you to be fearless and to fear less.

Maureen and her husband, Raymond, reside in Texas, where they have transplanted almost their entire family from California.

More from Marta and Maureen
