About the Book
Book: The Pages of Her Life
Author: James L. Rubart
Genre: Christian fiction – suspense
Release Date: May 21, 2019
Award-winning and bestselling author James L. Rubart explores the way our memories shape us . . . and how they affect our beliefs.
Allison Moore has no idea why she got out of her car on that rainy March afternoon and picked up the soaked journal laying on the side of the road. Brought it home. But she did. It was empty. Except for two lines scrawled in the front, too washed out to read. And a Jesus emblem inside the back cover. Something about the journal compels her to start writing in it, capturing thoughts about her newly acquired job that she thought would be heaven, but has turned into hell. Then one day, she finds words in the center of the journal. Words she didn’t write: Mene mene tekel upharsin. After her heart stops hammering, Allison Googles the phrase, and reads the story of Belshazzar’s Feast, where a hand from God writes on the wall, and the king is slain. Fear grips her, certain God is coming after her for what she did twelve years back. What she’s done wrong her whole life. She vows to make things right. Then she discovers more phrases appearing underneath each of her journal entries. Those phrases take her on an emotional roller coaster that forces her to look at everything she believes about her past in a new light, and opens her eyes to a supernatural realm of staggering consequence.

Wow- I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this book, it is hard to find a starting point. Let me begin by saying this book totally gripped my soul in a way that no other book ever has. I felt that the author got into my soul and wrote my story- not so much because I had similar circumstances to the author, because I don't- but because I really related with how Allison felt toward others and dealt with challenges. There was so much emotion and real life packed in this book, it just really came together to be a work of art. The themes within included the need for validation, strained parental relationships, looking inward to the Holy Spirit and who he created us to be, drawing on His strength to be who he called us to be, legalism, religion without knowing Christ, and more. The suspense found within was intriguing and woven in beautifully. The protagonists and antagonists were clearly done and very relatable. The plot was steady, and the interactions made you feel part of the story. I would say trigger alert for those who may have strained parental relationships, or if you are just going through an emotional time in your life, because this book contains a lot of intense emotion and it really grips you. I would also say while the book was contemporary and the language used was very easy to comprehend, the subtlety and level of writing was very high so it really requires time to digest. The message may be confusing to some that we are looking inward to our own strength vs. the Holy Spirit, but I feel that if you are reading the book through the lens of the Scripture, it makes more sense- it is just a high level of writing and comprehension that requires time to digest. The book is so painful and so healing at the same time. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes an emotional read that doesn't center around a romance, some different type suspense, contemporary fiction readers, or those who just like really well written Christian fiction.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, and all opinions given are entirely my own.
